"The #Endhunger and #Badgovernance protests in Nigeria have reached a critical juncture, entering their sixth day of the proposed 10-day civil action. While the protests may have lost momentum in driving meaningful change, they have exposed profound threats to our democratic journey, revealing a complex tapestry of narratives and mindsets among stakeholders.
The diverse expectations and perspectives of Nigerians have come to the fore, laying bare the ethnic divides and political polarization that undermine our proclaimed "unity in diversity." The call for foreign intervention in our democratic administration is particularly troubling, given the global trend of military takeovers. This narrative portrays our democracy as a failed experiment, emboldening the military to seize power.
But what does this mean for the world's most populous black nation? Are we willing to revert to institutional comatose? Have we carefully considered the consequences of such actions?
Confronting a democratically elected President, regardless of the legitimacy of the election process, is a treasonable offense that challenges the sovereignty of our nation. It undermines the legitimacy of our systems and triggers a dangerous reaction from the government. The use of force to quell dissent may seem like a solution, but it only perpetuates a cycle of violence and repression.
In my opinion and dutiful study of the before and during the ongoing nationwide protest, the following are some of the threats to Nigeria's democracy that I can glean:
1. Ethnic divides and political polarization: The protests have exposed deep-seated ethnic and political divisions, which can undermine national unity and democratic stability.
2. Call for foreign intervention: The request for external intervention in Nigeria's democratic administration could lead to a loss of sovereignty and potentially pave the way for military takeover.
3. Military hijack: The global trend of military takeovers in democratic systems poses a threat to Nigeria's democratic experiment.
4. Use of force: The government's reaction to the protests with force could lead to further unrest, violence, and repression.
5. Erosion of legitimacy: Confronting a democratically elected President, regardless of the election process's legitimacy, challenges the sovereignty and legitimacy of Nigeria's democratic systems.
6. Institutional comatose: Reverting to military rule or authoritarianism could lead to a decline in democratic institutions and practices.
7. Divisive antics: The persistence of divisive rhetoric and actions can hinder national unity and progress, undermining democratic values.
These threats highlight the need for Nigerians to come together, address our differences, and work towards strengthening our democratic institutions and practices.
We must recognize that our actions have consequences, shaping the course of history and influencing the behavior of future generations. We owe it to posterity to create a positive narrative, one that will define the identity of our unborn children as citizens of Africa's most prosperous nation.
Let us give democracy a chance to flourish in our society. Let us focus on pruning and purging ourselves of the divisive antics that hinder our progress. Let us work towards unity, embracing our diversity as a strength rather than a weakness. Only then can we ensure a bright future for ourselves and generations to come."
