Some parents raising children with severe autism in New Jersey are falling through the cracks of a system in crisis.
Chelsea Cella’s daughter, diagnosed with severe autism, isn’t receiving anywhere near her prescribed hours of behavioral therapy which helps her communicate and navigate daily life. As a result of the reduced therapy hours, Gianna’s behavior has regressed leaving Chelsea feeling burned out, isolated and unsure of where to turn for help. The Cella family isn’t alone. A shortage of therapy professionals is causing an immense strain on the system in N.J. that connects families to desperately-needed services.
