You misunderstand Jianghu — and that’s completely normal.
Most people think Jianghu (江湖) is just a place. A region. A map. A “martial world” you travel to. But Jianghu was never a physical location to begin with.

In this video, we break down what Jianghu really means, why it exists outside law and authority, and why understanding it completely changes how you see Wuxia stories and games like Where Winds Meet. This explanation comes from a Chinese cultural perspective — not a Wikipedia summary, not a surface-level definition, but how Jianghu is actually understood by people who grew up with these stories.

If Wuxia is the spirit of the hero, then Jianghu is the world that spirit lives in. A world built on reputation, personal code, consequence, and memory — not kings, courts, or written law. Once you understand Jianghu, you’ll realize why characters move the way they do, why factions clash endlessly, and why freedom in Wuxia always comes at a cost.
