If you attend the Emergency Department at our South West Acute Hospital, there are a number of different areas you may be treated, depending on the nature or the severity of your condition.
If it is deemed appropriate, then you may instead receive the entirety of your treatment from triage through to discharge in what we call Area 3, our unit looking after minor injuries and ailments.
This unit is staffed with a range of emergency department staff including Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, nurses, doctors and trainees, and operates from 8.00am to 8.00pm each day, with access to radiology and other diagnostics to help us identify any problems.
Around a third of those attending our Emergency Department are able to be seen, treated, and discharged quickly from Area 3.
Some of the most common injuries and ailments we treat in this area are:
Minor head injuries
Facial injuries including foreign bodies in the eyes or nose
Upper and lower limb injuries including fractures, dislocations, bruises and sprains
Uncomplicated wounds
Bites, burns and scalds
Nosebleeds
Abscesses and other wound issues
Neck and back pain
If you attend SWAH ED at night and your condition is deemed not to be urgent, then we may recommend you return to the comfort of your own home before coming back to us when the minors unit reopens the following morning, saving you a lengthy sit in a waiting room.
So remember, even if our Emergency Department is busy, our minors stream in Area 3 is still available to take care of many of the most common complaints you may have.
