Everyone knows the riff. But what happens if you take it away?
For this "Payoff Mix" of Rick James' 1981 classic, we went into the chassis and cut the synthesizer line out of the verses completely. We starved the listener of that famous hook for over a minute, leaving just the raw "Punk Funk" drums and bass to carry the groove.
When the chorus finally hits at 1:06... it hits harder than the original.
