Elwood residents seek solutions after grocery store closure

The Elwood Hometown Cooperative Market closed it's doors for the final time in March of this year, to the dismay of many residents. Now, the Center for Rural Affairs is investigating the factors behind the shutdown and exploring ways to ensure the availability of grocery stores in rural areas.
"It's incredibly difficult to own and operate a grocery store in a rural place, and it can also be difficult for rural grocery stores to have the purchasing power of larger competitors, such as a Dollar General or a Walmart," said Audra Espinoza, state policy manager for the Center for Rural Affairs.
Residents of Elwood, along with local grocers, a legislative aide, and other concerned parties gathered to share their experiences and discuss adaptations following the store's closure. Many now face a nearly half-hour drive to Lexington or rely on deliveries from Walmart.
