For many years there have been rumours that elongated skulls were excavated from the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum on Malta in the early 20th century, along with thousands of other skeletal remains. These long-headed or dolichocephalic crania have received a lot of attention from the alternative history community including those who research the idea of ancient aliens. In this video I look at the evidence including the original excavation reports.
The mysterious underground sanctuary known as the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum dates back more than 5,000 years to the Neolithic and appears to have been both a necropolis and a subterranean temple. Its trilithon doorways and carved walls resemble the megalithic temples above ground that were built at around the same time.
However, its unique finds such as the famous 'sleeping Lady' figurine and its strange features including the deep funnel-shaped pit, make it even more mysterious. Rituals clearly took place there, but the nature of them is not known.
The skulls and disarticulated skeletons that were found heaped inside have confused experts because they would expect such a finely carved sanctuary to have been for carefully laid out burials, not a dumping ground for bones. Although the numbers thrown around are quite an exaggeration, skeletal remains were certainly found.
There is a lot to unpick. The rumours, which are founded on a certain amount of fact, have made the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum even more legendary. Numerous articles and videos talk of elongated skulls, a connection to Peru, thousands of bones and ancient aliens. So, let me take you on a journey into this world of wild speculation as I work out what is and is not an actual mystery.
