Joe Montana tossed two touchdown passes as the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 31-16 at Candlestick Park. Dallas opened the scoring when Gary Hogeboom threw a one yard touchdown pass to Doug Cosbie. In the second quarter, Rafael Septien nailed field goals of 29 and 48 yards as Dallas built a 13-0 lead. Montana threw a 49 yard touchdown pass to Dwight Clark getting the 49ers on the board. The teams then exchanged field goals and Dallas took a 16-10 lead into halftime. In the third quarter Roger Craig scored on a four yard run and Jerry Rice scored on a 15 yard run giving the 49ers a 24-16 lead as the game moved to the fourth quarter. In the final period, Montana threw a 24 yard touchdown pass to Clark, capping the scoring. It would be the final score giving the 49ers a 31-16 win. Montana completed 24 of 34 passes for 322 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Rice led the 49erw with seven catches for 111 yards. Craig rushed 13 times for 72 yards and caught five passes for 50 yards giving him 1000 yards rushing and 1000 yards receiving for the season. Hogeboom finished 28 of 49 for 389 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Mike Renfro led all receivers with 9 catches for 164 yards and Karl Powe added seven catches for 127 yards.
