Most of us use radio every day, but we rarely think about how it all began.
First of all… let’s go back to the very start
the creation of radio.
Radio didn’t start with music or news.
It started with science.
In the 1860s, a physicist named James Clerk Maxwell predicted something crazy for the time:
that invisible electromagnetic waves could travel through the air.
Then in 1887, a German scientist named Heinrich Hertz proved Maxwell was right.
He created sparks in one machine… and made sparks jump in another machine across the room.
He showed that radio waves were real even though he didn’t think they had any practical use.
Next came the inventors.
Nikola Tesla demonstrated wireless communication.
And Guglielmo Marconi took the ideas and made real technology.
In 1901, Marconi sent the first radio signal across the Atlantic Ocean.
Radio was officially born.
At first, radio could only send Morse code, just beeps.
But in 1906, Reginald Fessenden made the first voice and music broadcast.
People heard a violin and a Christmas message through their radios.
By the 1920s, radio exploded.
Families gathered around the radio for news, sports, dramas, and music.
It became the world’s first mass communication technology.
And that’s where AM and FM come in.
AM stands for Amplitude Modulation.
It was the first big radio system.
AM radio can travel very far, especially at night.
But the downside?
It’s easily affected by noise thunderstorms and electrical lines.
Still, AM became the foundation of global broadcasting.
Then came FM : Frequency Modulation.
Created to fix AM’s problems.
FM gives:
Clearer sound
Less noise
Better music quality
But FM doesn’t travel as far as AM.
So it became the home of music stations, while AM stayed strong for talk and news.
And now we have DAB: Digital Audio Broadcasting.
Instead of sending radio as waves, DAB sends it as digital data.
This gives:
Cleaner sound
More stations
On-screen info
And no static
DAB is basically radio moving into the digital future.
So yes — AM, FM, DAB.
Three generations of the same technology.
From invisible waves predicted in the 1800s…
to music and news that follow us everywhere today.
Radio started with sparks in a lab.
And now it’s in our phones, cars, and whole culture.
So in short:
AM was the first big radio system — long range but noisy.
FM improved sound by changing how waves are used.
DAB made radio digital, cleaner, and modern.
