The video that started it all , the B Bomb dropped when I saw Benjamin Orr _Electric Angel Rock and Roller with The Cars and Let's Go."Let's Go" was the first single from The Cars' album Candy-O released in 1979. It was written by Ric Ocasek and features lead vocals by Cars bassist Ben Orr. The single peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S., but the song was an even bigger success elsewhere. In Canada, the track reached #5, and remains the Cars' highest ever charting single in that country. Similarly, in my adopted home Australia "Let's Go" peaked at #6, and remains The Cars' highest charted hit in that country. What this song means to me personally: This was the first time I ever saw this band perform when this song came on the TV and to me it still blows me away after decades and I will never get tired of this video or of The Cars.
I love Benjamin Orr's voice, his magnetism, charisma, his bass sound and the way he plays that bass. He plays up to the camera perfectly and it shows that he had been a performing musician since he was a kid basically. The Cars represent to me the best of music, a sound that is entirely unique to them, whether it is the incredible vocals of Benjamin, the truly inspirational guitar playing and sound of Elliot Easton , the unique and defining sound of the keyboards of the talented Greg Hawkes, the pounding drums of fantastic David Robinson or the quirkiness of Ric Ocasek's vcal style and his truly impressive songwriting skills. The band to me represent a juxtaposition of heavy, pop, new wave and really heavy music and always have an unexpected touch, just think of 1987 Strap Me In which goes from sweet to this heavy riff that just makes me want to weep with joy. I am very passionate about this band.
I wish to try to continue spreading the word about this legendary band and musician and perhaps help a younger audience find out about these musicians and become new fans :)
