She grew up learning how to fold herself small,
Laughed when they laughed, swallowed every fall.
The jokes were knives, but they called it a game,
Whispers in the hallway taught her to take the blame.
A cracked-open window, she watched the streetlights glow,
Thought the world outside must be the same she knows.


There was a map in her chest she never read,

I’m learning to be light, not a shadow on the wall,
