Science for biodiversity: The work of the Instituto de Ecología in Bolivia

Описание: Since 2007, the Instituto de Ecología at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz (UMSA) has been conducting research on biodiversity, soils, and the water cycle within the SysCom project, as part of a long-term trial comparing different production systems for cacao. By studying birds, ants, fungi, macroinvertebrates, and plants, this scientific work seeks to understand how agricultural systems can conserve up to 70% of local biodiversity, contributing to ecological balance and the well-being of rural communities. This effort combines rigorous research, continuous monitoring, and outreach, bringing scientific knowledge closer to communities and promoting sustainable agricultural practices that protect Bolivia’s natural heritage.
