When does it make sense to send a collector a cease and desist letter?

When you're dealing with a collector, you can send a cease and desist letter when they're trying to collect really old debt.

Debt that is too old for them to credit report, and when it's too old to sue you for.

There's no magic words to use, you can simply let them know that you want them to stop contacting you.

They'll usually sell the debt to another collector who isn't bound by the cease and desist letter that you sent the last collector, so you will need to send another letter to the new collector. But if they violate the cease and desist letter, then you can look to sue the debt collector for money damages. :)
