5 Things You Didn’t Know About Call of Duty: World at War (in text form)

5. Several weapons were cut from World at War at various stages in development. Among them are the Sten, which has a few images left in-game along with some animations. The Bren also has images left in-game, and was likely cut due to it looking very similar to the Type 99 machine gun. The Lee-Enfield was cut from the game, much like the rest of the British campaign, and has some leftover images in the game’s files. Lastly there was the PPS-43. The weapon only has a HUD icon left in the game, which suggests that it was cut pretty early on and eventually replaced by the PPSH-41.

4. The origins of the Double Barrel Shotgun found in World at War is quite a mystery. In the game’s campaign, it is only used by German and Russian soldiers. The in-game description for the weapon says that it is an American made shotgun, but the World at War strategy guide says that the gun is Russian. Speaking of the Double Barrel Shotgun, in the PC version of World at War, the saw-off variation of the shotgun can be found on the Nazi Zombies map, Der Riese. When upgraded with the Pack-A-Punch machine, the gun becomes “The Snuff Box”.

3. Weapon camouflages were supposed to make an appearance in World at War, but were cut. There are 11 known camos that would have been in the game. They are: Reich, Siberian, Royal, Yankee, Rising Sun, Gold, Olive, Setting Sun, Jewel, Blood, and Ocean.

2. German propaganda can be heard throughout the multiplayer map, Downfall. When translated, it says: "Once again it has proven itself that nobody and nothing can stop our army. The enemy wants to make us believe something different but leave it, unheard and unnoticed. Our brave soldiers hold every position and don't leave from the spot. At least we will have triumph."

1. There are 5 levels from World at War’s campaign that were scrapped for various reasons.

Originally, World at War was going to contain a British campaign, Holland was the setting of three of these missions. The three missions saw the player stealing German documents while disguised as Germans, defusing bombs on bridges, traversing a forest filled with Bouncing Betty’s, and ending with the player taking part in an assault on a German mansion filled with POW’s.

A second cut level has no official name. In the mission, the player controlled a F4U Corsair plane. Thus, the mission has been given the name, Fly.

Another set of three missions was cut from the game, and would have taken place in Rhineland, or areas of Germany along the river Rhine between Bingen and the Dutch border. These three missions were another portion of the cancelled British campaign.

The fourth level was a simple Training mission which would have been very similar to the level FNG from Call of Duty 4.

Finally, we have the prologue. The prologue would have taken place on May 29, 1945, with the on-screen location calling it “Somewhere Dark and Far From Home”. The player is woken up by an officer telling them that Japanese forces are incoming. A scout goes to investigate a noise, the officer whispers their name, and a flare goes up, alerting the rest of the Japanese forces that you had been spotted. With little ammo, you fight off several waves of enemies until you run out of ammo or time runs out. Then, you are decapitated from behind, and the screen fades to black.
