The Battle for Water and Life: Sakineh, Shahab, and Sobhi Full of Determination and Hope

Shahab, Sakineh, and Asiyeh sat together and ate their morsels in a kindly silence—a small moment of peace amidst the chaos of change.

But a sudden water problem made the day more serious: the house’s faucet was overflowing, and the water was flowing in the wrong direction. Mohammad, Shahab’s old neighbor and friend, arrived, and together with Shahab they decided to get to work on solving the problem. Shahab, determined and with a pickaxe, dug a channel and directed the water in the right direction—a difficult and dirty task, but necessary to preserve their home and their safety.

In the midst of this predicament, Sakineh, who was pregnant, became unwell; vomiting and heartburn troubled her. Fear for her child’s health weighed heavily on her heart. Shahab said with compassion and concern: “Let’s go to the doctor, I don’t know how things are.” But Sakineh stubbornly refused; perhaps out of fear of going to the city, perhaps out of distrust of what he said, or the feeling that she had to appear strong.

The atmosphere was full of contrasts: Shahab’s exhausting efforts to save the house, Mohammad’s hope and empathy, Sakineh’s tired and worried face, and the presence of Asiyeh who had come to seek refuge. Each had their own role—one digging to collect water, another opening her heart to her housemates, and another struggling with fears and hopes in her heart.

This morning was a picture of life: work and effort, fear and love, decision and doubt. Sakineh and Shahab were trying to hold on to the rope of life amidst these waves;
