Frank Lloyd Wright’s Last Residential Vision: The Circular Sun House
6836 N 36th Street, Phoenix, Arizona | Designed 1959, Completed 1967 | 3,095 sq. ft.
Nestled along the edge of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve and seamlessly blending with the desert surroundings, the Circular Sun House—often referred to as the Norman Lykes House—marks the final residential project designed by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright. Commissioned in 1959 and brought to completion in 1967 by Wright’s apprentice, John Rattenbury, this remarkable property is one of only 14 circular homes ever conceived by the architect.
The house’s signature design springs from a series of interlocking concentric circles, crafting a fluid, organic layout that echoes the natural contours of the neighboring mountains. Throughout the home, Wright’s meticulous craftsmanship is unmistakable: golden Philippine mahogany walls, hand-selected Indian slate flooring, stainless steel-accented kitchen surfaces, and a master bath adorned in honed Italian rose marble.
Inside and out, the boundaries blur thanks to wide terraces and a crescent-shaped pool lined with mother-of-pearl tiles, all oriented to capture breathtaking vistas of Palm Canyon and the Phoenix cityscape. Constructed from sand-hued concrete block, the residence appears to grow out of the desert boulders themselves—a vivid realization of Wright’s commitment to organic architecture. Details such as original Hope’s steel windows, thoughtfully integrated lighting, and expansive sightlines complete this architectural gem.
Far more than just a striking piece of American architectural history, the Circular Sun House stands as a living testament to Wright’s enduring ideals—where form, function, and the natural world exist in exquisite balance.
