Lets say that you need to count the number of cells in a range, if a condition is met, such as in this example, for the cells in column A.

For the example, we are going to see how many times ABC Lumber may a purchase.

We are going to put the answer in cell D2, so left click on cell D2. Next, we type in an equals sign, then we type in the letters cou, and a drop down box will appear. In the box, left double click on COUNTIF.

From here, we are going to go to the first cell in the range of cells, cell A2, and left click and hold, and then drag down to the last cell in our range of cells, cell A13, then release the left click and hold.

And next, we type in a comma. From here, we need to put in the condition, which has to be surrounded by quotation marks, so type in a quotation mark, then type in the text string, abc, space, lumber. Next, type in another quotation mark, then type in a closed parenthesis to close off the function. And to finish, hit the enter key, and we have our answer of 4.

As another example, I have the function written out in cell D3, to check column B for purchases that are greater than $1000, again, the condition is surrounded by quotation marks. I hit the enter key, and we get 3 purchases.
