In the mid-1990s a revolution took place in UK clubland. After Acid House was legislated out of existence by the UK government, something was bubbling from the streets of London.
For my memoir, The Editor Who Knew Too Much, I spoke to the premier DJ of the movement, DJ Spoony and forensically examined the rise of UK Garage - a sound that he helped create, define and take international.
This video is a personal, first-hand story from that interview — what it was really like to be rubbing shoulders with David Beckham, Victoria Adams, Jay-Z, Wesley Snipes, Pink, Method Man and a whole load more global celebrities every Sunday at Steve Gordon’s Twice as Nice at Vauxhall’s Colosseum. The fashions, music and aesthetic of that time were crazy and influential and inspired a generation.
No hype. No retelling from the internet. Just real memories from someone who was actually there.
