I own a car, but the idea of buying another car does not appeal to me. Maybe an ebike is a good motorized alternative for someone who enjoys cycling but needs or wants a boost.

There are many ebike kits available for do-it-yourself building.

Hub drive ebike motors replace the rear wheel. A popular brand is BionX.

Mid drive ebike motors replace the crank. Typically this type is more powerful but harder to install than hub motors. A popular brand is e-Rad.

One other type of ebike motor is the infamous Gruber Assist that brings to mind pro cycling mechanical doping allegations, and recently, actual cases. As far as I know such a small motor helps keep a steady pace with a little less effort but is not very powerful like the larger ebike motors (above).

Bike manufacturers also offer a few ebike options, but you'll pay more for them because they are a niche product.

I really like the ebikes that integrate the battery into the frame and provide a clean look. Hopefully the price and tech will get better. I wouldn't park an ebike outside.

If you are in the market for an ebike I highly recommend reading ebike reviews and doing your own research because there are many different options: motors, batteries, controls, and you tend to get what you pay for.

Tires are important. Wide tires with low air pressure will make an ebike ride better. Suspension also helps.

Ebikes are a technology, which means they get better every year so buying one is like buying an expensive car, phone, computer, etc. Riding a regular bike makes YOU better every year. ;)

The ironic problem with ebikes is that although they allow you go longer distances with less effort, the battery limits your ride time before becoming an anchor you have to drag. This fact is contrary to the cyclist sense of freedom.

Why an ebike and not a motorcycle or moped or scooter? An ebike can be ridden like a normal bicycle with many of its advantages, and can be street legal without the paperwork.

The bike in this video is a single speed bike powered entirely by my manly legs. :)
