The Holy Roman Empire dominated western Europe for a thousand years. At various points it encompassed all of modern day Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Belgium, and the Netherlands as well as large parts of Poland, France and Italy. In this episode we'll meet Charlemagne who, while forcing christianity on his neighbors, built a massive empire. And his decedents who squabbled and divided it into ever smaller pieces and put a Pope's corpse on trial.
