According to the survey conducted before major regional elections, 45 percent of Labour members believe Starmer should step down, while 51 percent said they no longer trust him to turn around the party’s declining political position.

The poll also identified Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham as the preferred successor among party members, with Burnham securing strong favourability ratings. Several Labour MPs reportedly want Starmer to establish a timetable for an orderly leadership transition that could eventually allow Burnham to contest for parliament and potentially lead the party nationally.

The findings come after Labour suffered significant setbacks across England, Scotland and Wales. Reform UK won hundreds of council seats, the SNP secured another major victory in Scotland, while Plaid Cymru ended a century of Labour dominance in Wales. The Greens also made gains in London, reflecting wider frustration among progressive voters over Starmer’s direction and strategy.
