I asked Jason Lee (Chief Intelligence Officer at Moody’s Analytics) one of my favorite closing questions on the Innovation Storytellers Show, “What do you think is the greatest innovation of all time?”
His answer surprised me, but it also made perfect sense. He picked the cell phone, not because it is a shiny gadget, but because it is a masterclass in what innovation really does. It changes behavior, it shifts expectations, and it forces the world around it to catch up.
Jason remembers the “brick phone” era and the wall phone era, when being reachable meant being at home. Now we live in a world where a parent can check where their child is, or even track a backpack, without making a call.
But he also points out the part we forget. Big innovations arrive before the rest of the infrastructure is ready. Towers, wires, pricing models, habits, regulations, support systems, even social norms, all have to adjust. Innovation creates progress, and friction, at the same time.
That’s the real takeaway for anyone building today in AI, data, fintech, or security. The breakthrough is rarely the hard part. Helping the world adopt it safely, clearly, and at the right pace is where the real work begins.
If you had to pick one, what’s the greatest innovation of all time, and what did it break before it made life better?
