~ The Community Gathers in Silence ~
Gathering Music
You are invited to begin this season in reflection by going to the prayer stations set up in the room. Each prayer station invites you into a time of reflection. You are also welcome to sit in prayerful silence in your seat.
CONFESSION OF SIN
Minister - As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to struggle against everything that leads away from the love of God and neighbor. Repentance, fasting, prayer, study, and works of love help us return to that love. I invite you, to commit yourselves to love God and neighbor by confessing your sin and by asking God for forgiveness.
Silence
Leader - Let us pray.
People - Most holy and merciful God; we confess to you and to one another, that we have sinned by our own fault in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
Leader - We have been deaf to your call to serve Christ as Christ served us. We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved your Holy Spirit.
People - Have mercy on us, O God.
Leader - We confess to you, O God, all our past unfaithfulness. The pride of hypocrisy and impatience in our lives.
People - We confess to you, O God.
Leader - Our selfish ways and our exploitation of other people.
People - We confess to you, O God.
Leader - Our anger at our own frustration and our envy of others.
People - We confess to you, O God.
Leader - Our negligence in prayer & worship. Our failure to commend the faith that is in us.
People - We confess to you, O God.
Leader - Accept our repentance, O God, for the wrongs we have done. For our neglect of human need and suffering and our indifference to injustice and cruelty.
People - Accept our repentance, O God.
Leader - For all the false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbors, and for our prejudice and contempt toward those who differ from us.
People - Accept our repentance, O God, for your mercy is great. Amen.

Musical Offering
Sending out with the Good News of God’s forgiveness, Rev. Kara K. Foster
Leader - Holy God, accomplish in us the work of your salvation,
People - that we may show forth your glory.
Leader- By the cross and passion of our Savior,
People - bring us with all your saints to the joy of Christ’s resurrection.
Leader - Hear the good news of God’s reconciling love toward all and believe.
May the Spirit’s cleansing fire burn within us. Lift us from the dying embers of our inattention. Mark us with the sign of your holy passion & make us ready to respond to the call of Jesus Christ.
All - Thanks be to God. Amen.

What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday is an ancient holy day in the Christian church calendar. It marks the beginning of the season of Lent – a time or penitence, discipline, and renewal. In the Ash Wednesday Service we are reminded of our mortality, we confess our sins, and we experience forgiveness through Christ’s death and resurrection. The ‘imposition of ashes’ is a central part of the service. In scripture, ashes serve both as a symbol of mortality and as a sign of mourning and repentance. The ashes on our forehead are an act of confession and a sign of mortality and penitence. As disciples of Jesus Christ we are called to struggle against everything that leads us away from the love of God and neighbor.
