The Waitakere Coast Region right outside of Auckland is a gorgeous section of New Zealand! It is so close to Auckland, it makes for great day trips! Most commonly know in the Waitakere region is the famous surf break and beach...Piha. Today, we venture to a lesser-known gem not too far away called Whatipu Caves. While it was the rainy season while we passed through, from further research, we learned that it is generally a pretty muddy track. It's advertised to be a 45 minute return hike. We took much longer. Scattered along the track you can find many ancient sea caves to explore. One of which used to be home to dances nearly 100 years ago. Buried 5 meters under the sand is the dance floor!
