LIVE | RTI query: Is EC's independence compromised? Jawhar Sircar exclusive

Описание: An RTI disclosure has raised fresh questions about the independence of the Election Commission of India and the role of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. An Indian Express investigation reported that Election Commissioners Vivek Joshi and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu had separately written to Cabinet Secretary TV Somanathan seeking action against a senior official within the EC. File notings obtained under the RTI by Commodore Lokesh Batra (retd) reportedly show that the Cabinet Secretariat acknowledged the letters but decided against further action, citing the commissioners’ individual capacity and concerns about interference in a constitutional body. But what happened to the letters, and what does the RTI disclosure reveal about the relationship between the EC and the government? Doesn't it raise serious questions about the institution’s independence? Watch The Federal in conversation with former Rajya Sabha MP, retired bureaucrat and author Jawhar Sircar.
