The accused, 25-year-old Daniel Senecal – a registered sex offender – appeared for a virtual bail hearing Wednesday that was adjourned to a later date.
Senecal is facing charges related to the sexual assault of a young girl during a break-in at a home in Welland.
Outside the courtroom, a large number of people gathered calling for changes to the criminal justice system.
“We’re going to ensure there is bail reform, and we’re going to ensure the perpetrator is labeled a dangerous offender,” said one speaker at the protest.
“I believe the law enforcement, the police themselves are doing what they can, but I believe the justice system isn’t doing enough,” said one attendee.

“Being a victim, I need to show support because there’s not only been many, but there’s going to be many if the laws don’t change,” said another attendee.
