The Polemi Detention Center was one of eight British camps in Cyprus during the Cypriot War of Independence.
Cyprus gained independence from the United Kingdom on August 16, 1960. The island became the Republic of Cyprus and joined the United Nations in 1961.
The Memorial building was opened in 2004, the sites future is uncertain.
