In this quick tech how to video, I’m going to show you how you can disable spam message requests from users who aren’t on your friend's list on Instagram.

To find this setting, open Instagram and tap your profile icon on the bottom right.

Inside of here, tap the three-line menu icon on the top right.

Next, choose Settings, and then Privacy.

Inside of the Privacy settings, tap Messages.

Here is where you’ll find all your message controls. In the top section, potential connections, you can leave these settings at the default, as it can allow people who Instagram or Facebook assumes you know.

The options we’re looking for are in the next section, Other People. Tap Others on Instagram, and then inside of here choose Don’t Receive Requests. This will turn off the ability for spam or unknown contacts to send you a message request. Go back and do this for the next option, Others On Facebook, as well.

Another option that you may want to change here is Who can add you to groups. Choose that and inside of here change this to Only People You Follow on Instagram.

When you’re finished, you can head back to the main feed.

And in the future, if you’re still getting more messages than you’d prefer, you can always head back into here and change the top section to don’t receive requests on all these too.

And that’s how you disable spam message requests from unknown users on Instagram.
