While the Trump administration has pushed major arms deals — including advanced F-35 fighter jets — Saudi leadership is now prioritising co-production, technology transfer, and local manufacturing as part of its Vision 2030 strategy. Türkiye’s flexibility in sharing defence technology has made it an attractive alternative.

The issue goes beyond aircraft purchases. It reflects a broader regional realignment, with Saudi Arabia building closer ties with Türkiye, Pakistan, Egypt, and Qatar, while sharpening competition with the UAE and recalibrating its quiet cooperation with Israel.

For Washington, the concern is simple: Riyadh’s spending is drifting elsewhere, weakening American leverage in the Middle East. For Saudi Arabia, it marks a strategic shift toward defence independence in a rapidly multipolar region.
