A new wheel set is one of the finest additions you can make to complete the factory look of your dirt bike. Our friends at Talon and Excel have put together these wheels for our Honda CRF450 using magnesium Talon hubs and black Excel signature series rims, and the finished product is a masterpiece. These guys certainly know what they're doing when it comes to aftermarket wheel sets.
Their Talon hubs are widely renowned as the best hub that money can buy. Lighter and stronger than the majority of hubs on the market, a 36 hole construction offers superior strength that a bike like ours will froth all over. Quality and performance should always come first when it comes to replacing parts like your wheels, and you can't go wrong with a set of these beauties.
Installing your new wheels is a pretty simple task on its own. The more difficult part will be swapping out the tyres and tubes while you're at it.
Your first step will be making sure the rim lock is undone. Next you'll want to remove the valve core, which will make it easier to remove and refit the tube, as well lowering the chance of pinching it. Once the tyre is deflated, remember to ensure the bead has been popped on both sides of the tyre.
Using your tyre levers, you'll want to pull the first side of the tyre off the rim. This can be done using the pointy end of your tyre levers, taking small bites and working your way around the wheel, generally finishing at the rim lock. If it becomes hard to pull the lever over, ensure that the bead on the opposite side of the tyre is still pushed into the rim. This will make the job a much easier task.
Lift the side of the tyre up and remove your old tube. If you are removing the tyre off the rim, you will need to put a tyre lever in the opposite side of the tyre to start popping the bead off that side of the rim. Again work your way around the rim, and this can generally be done by hand after a few bites with the tyre levers. A ballards power lever can be handy for the final stages of removing a tyre off the rim.
Now you'll want to get started on your new tubes and tyres. The first step is to place the rim lock inside the tyre, which will be your starting point for the first side. Work your way around the tyre with a lever, using a lubricant on the bead to make the job easier if required.
Once the first side of the tyre is on, we need to install the tube. The tube is installed easier when it has taken some shape, so it may pay to inflate and deflate it prior to installation. Starting at the valve core, line up with the hole in the rim, and once this is through feed the rest of the tube around and then all we need to do is install the other side of the tyre.
As a general rule of thumb, because everyone is different, it is advised to start opposite the rimlock, so that you will finish up at the rimlock. This makes for a far easier installation. Using two tyre levers, start off with larger bites and work your way around the rim. Initially you may need to hold the tyre lever in place to ensure the bead is down in the well of the rim. When finishing at the rimlock with the final section of the bead, please ensure that you push up on the rimlock before popping the last bit of bead over the rim. Otherwise it may get trapped which would result in the bead not seating on the rim.
Once the tyre has been installed, don't forget to re-install the valve core before inflating the tube. Inflate until the bead has seated correctly, adjust the tyre pressure, and the tighten up the rim lock. Also remember to reinstall your valve cap before finishing up.
You will need to adjust the wheel to a position on the swingarm using the chain adjusters to get the correct chain adjustment as specified in the user manual. As a general rule, measure three fingers of distance between the chain slider on the swingarm and the chain, as a rough guide if you don't know the exact specifications your particular bike.
When refitting the front wheel, there is a technique to realigning the front forks before completing the installation. Install the front wheel and slide the axle through, then tighten up the axle nut without tensioning the pinch bolts. While on the stand, pump the front brake and push down on the forks 4-5 times. This will help realign the forks before completing the installation of the front wheel. Once you've realigned the forks you can go back and tighten up the pinch bolts and re-check the axle nut.
