The giant armadillo, the largest of armadillos, reaches its southernmost distribution in Argentina’s Chaco region, the country’s largest biome and the second-largest forested area in the Americas, that is suffering a process of fragmentation due to the conversion to different productive land uses. Giant armadillos are found in low densities and are patchily distributed, and the species is categorized as Endangered both globally and locally. The Proyecto Tatú Carreta seeks to initiate the first extensive, long-term ecological study of the giant armadillo in Argentina and the region. The research aims to identify key factors determining the armadillo's presence, its ecological role, to develop conservation plans and to identify potential conservation corridors, to enhance the species' survival prospects amidst ongoing anthropogenic pressures.
