Though Ingenuine Mermen is a playful and absurd name, it alludes to the existential confusion caused by our collective detachment from history and the rapidly advancing technological intelligences that we are figuring out how to live with. We can now hide inside invisible walls, immerse ourselves in alternate realities, leave essential parts of ourselves here and there without noticing. Eye-to-eye connections suffer and inner worlds become debilitatingly fractured. How do we deal with this?

“Undone” and “Sincerity” are both curious inquiries into how we can think about these psychological issues on the personal and communal level. The final result of this session gives me hope that our age of isolation and loneliness has cracks in it, that the light shines through on its own, that it is our job to slowly pry open the entry points with concerted hands.

Homer’s postmodern odyssey?

Dr. Seuss wrote by observing the birds
he rhymed shit that rhymed and delivered the word
on time and with grace for all to be heard

god hasn’t died yet
he’s chillin in cryo with Tupac
and Nietzsche and rhinos and whatever else
we might lose in this psychopath epoch

so get off your iPad and nuzzle some dirt
make friends with a stranger ask where they hurt
delete your personas and fashion a self
make peace with a demon and build him a shelf
