The St. Louis Blues improved immensely at the start of the 1980s with a new collection of talented and gritty players. At the start of the 1979-80 season, the general manager Emile "The Cat” Francis brought in 10 new forwards, 4 defensemen and another goalie. The new core of his dynamic team was the captain Brian Sutter, the dangling playmaker Bernie Federko, and the lanky goalie Mike Liut.
In this video, St. Louis Blues' sportscaster Dan Kelly, coach Red Berenson, GM Emile Francis, and Hall of Famer Bernie Federko reflect on the St. Louis Blues' best season of the 1980s.
As they mentioned, almost every player had a career year. Mike Liut won the Lester B. Pearson award and was the runner-up to Gretzky for the Hart Memorial Trophy. Ten players had 20 or more goals during the season. Five players had 30 or more goals and Wayne Babych became the first St. Louis Blues player to score 50.
Unfortunately, the promise of greatness was short-lived. The Blues dipped to mediocrity for the next couple of years and the Blues faced possible relocation to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Although the franchise was saved, all the team's decisions were now based on budgetary concerns. New ownership had no commitment or interest in building a competitive or championship team.
