This video documents the deadly storm that passed through northwest Houston on May 16th, 2024. The video is from my dashcam as I am heading home from work. Beltway 8 started to back up, so I detoured onto West Road. This is where the video begins at 6:07pm. As I navigate an alternative way home, it goes from day to night within minutes. We had no idea that a Derecho was about to unleash its fury on the Houston metropolitan area. At the time, we believed that we were witnessing the start of a tornado. In fact, this storm did produce a tornado near Cypress, west of town. Regardless of whether this very broad rotating storm was a tornado or a derecho, the affects were devastating for much of the Houston area. There may be a lot of cellphone footage out there, but this dashcam video will show you just how the storm rolled into town and what it looked like when it let loose over FM 1960 and Jones Road.
