*Inflammatory vs Non-Inflammatory Arthritis – Explained Simply*
Arthritis refers to joint pain and stiffness, but not all arthritis is the same. It is broadly classified into *inflammatory* and *non-inflammatory* types, based on the underlying cause.
*Inflammatory arthritis* occurs due to immune-mediated inflammation of the joints. The immune system mistakenly attacks the joint lining (synovium), leading to pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. Morning stiffness usually lasts *more than 30–60 minutes* and improves with movement. Symptoms may be systemic, including fatigue, fever, or weight loss. Common examples include **rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis**. Blood tests often show raised inflammatory markers like **ESR and CRP**.
*Non-inflammatory arthritis* is mainly caused by mechanical wear and tear or degenerative changes in the joint cartilage. Pain typically worsens with activity and improves with rest. Morning stiffness is usually **short-lived (less than 30 minutes)**, and swelling is minimal or absent. The most common example is **osteoarthritis**, often affecting weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, and spine. Inflammatory markers are usually normal.
Understanding the difference between inflammatory and non-inflammatory arthritis is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, as management strategies differ significantly for each type.
