This is a video preview of a paddle trip on the New River in Virginia from the Byllesby Pool boat launch to the base of the Double Shoals rapid. It requires paddling upstream for two miles against the current, which is mostly very slow in this section but increases as you approach the rapid. Doing this paddle is the ONLY way to access this section of river without running the difficult Double Shoals rapid, a very long and technical class II-III rapid.
Unfortunately it is NOT possible to paddle upstream as far as the Double Shoals campsite at New River Trail State Park--the current becomes too strong to continue about a tenth of a mile before that point. Also due to a very steep bank it would be impractical to try and exit the river and portage your boat and all your gear to the campsite; therefore the only way the campsite can be reached by water is if you run the Double Shoals rapid.
