Iran announced that its Natanz nuclear facility had been damaged. The IAEA warned of the risk of a radiation leak, the Times of India reported, citing Iran's permanent representative to the IAEA.

The Natanz nuclear facility is one of Iran's nuclear facilities, built for uranium enrichment. The center's underground enrichment facility is protected by a concrete shield approximately 7.6 meters thick.

In 2025, during the US-Israeli operation, the facility was bombed by the Israel Defense Forces and then the US Air Force. No leaks or radioactive contamination were recorded at the Natanz nuclear facility after the Israeli strike, although the uranium enrichment plant was partially damaged.

According to Iranian authorities, the gas centrifuges at the Natanz nuclear facility are built 40–50 meters underground for security reasons. The existence of this nuclear facility was first revealed in 2002.

New Israeli strikes on Iran have caused serious damage to the uranium enrichment facility in Natanz. No further details have been released, but nuclear safety experts are warning that the Natanz nuclear complex could become a second Chernobyl.

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in April 26, 1986 had serious consequences for people, the environment, the economy, and the nuclear energy industry. More than 100,000 people were forced to flee their homes and resettle in other regions.

Radioactive substances spread as aerosols, which gradually settled on the earth's surface. The areas most severely affected were those in the immediate vicinity of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant: the northern districts of the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions of Ukraine, the Gomel region of Belarus, and the Bryansk region of Russia.

Radiation even affected some regions significantly distant from the accident site, such as the Leningrad Region, Mordovia, and Chuvashia, where radioactive fallout occurred. The accident led to increased incidence of cancer, immune system disorders, reproductive problems, and other chronic illnesses.

Recall, Iran accused Israel and the United States of having attacked its nuclear facility at Natanz, one of the main targets of the previous conflict between the three countries last June.

“The criminal regimes of the United States and Israel, pursuing their aggression, again targeted the Natanz nuclear site on Sunday afternoon in two brutal attacks,” Iran’s atomic energy chief Mohammad Eslami said in a letter to the UN’s nuclear watchdog quoted by state news agency IRNA.

Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency Reza Najafi said the key nuclear site Natanz had been attacked, without specifying further.

Opening an extraordinary session of the agency’s board of governors on Iran, IAEA head Rafael Grossi urged “all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation.”

“Regarding the status of the nuclear installations in Iran, up to now, we have no indication that any of the nuclear installations, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, the Tehran Research Reactor or other nuclear fuel cycle facilities have been damaged or hit,” he said.

The agency was trying to contact the Iranian nuclear regulatory authorities “with no response so far,” Grossi said in his statement, released by the IAEA, as he opened the session.

“We hope this indispensable channel of communication can be reestablished as soon as possible,” he added.

Najafi said the Natanz nuclear site had been attacked, saying the United States accusing Iran of trying to have a nuclear bomb was “just the pretext to attack and invade.”
