Описание: My very first introduction to big band music in high school came through this song, this band, and this legend. In the mid-1970s, Maynard Ferguson and his Big Band were absolute heroes to band kids all across the United States.

This iconic arrangement of “Gonna Fly Now” (Theme from Rocky) featured a powerhouse rhythm section with Peter Erskine on drums, Ralph MacDonald on congas, and Jeff Layton on guitar, creating an unforgettable groove behind Maynard’s soaring trumpet.

I was fortunate enough to see Maynard’s band perform this exact piece live at EPCOT in the late 1970s, and it left a lasting impression on me as a drummer and musician.

This performance is dedicated to Maynard Ferguson, as well as the recently departed Stan Mark, Maynard’s incredible lead trumpet player—and of course Peter Erskine, whose drumming set the standard behind the kit.

This chart was a real challenge to record without a click track—there’s a lot happening rhythmically. Special thanks to Julian Bond, who helped me repair the conga solo sync after the drum track edit removed the original conga reference.
