My name is Julie Osborn, and I am a Pediatric Gastroenterology fellow here at Cincinnati Children’s. I also am a liver transplant recipient and had a liver transplant here at Cincinnati Children's over 19 years ago.
Today, I am going to be talking with you about the importance of medication adherence, specifically for those post-liver transplant.
So, what does medication adherence mean? Medication adherence means taking all of your medications as directed, on time, and without missing doses.
Studies have shown that children with good medication adherence have better outcomes than those who experience difficulty taking their medications on a regular basis.
In the transplant world, this means less episodes of rejection, and their transplanted organ stays healthier longer.
Now, life after transplant is often a very hectic time for patients and their families. Keeping up with regular appointments, frequent lab draws, while caring for siblings, managing work and getting back to school and other activities can be very challenging.
With so many things going on, it can be hard to stay on top of a complex care regimen, especially when multiple medications are taken many times a day.
We know each family must deal with different struggles when it comes to medication adherence. That's why it's so important to talk to your provider about any difficulties you may be having. These difficulties can include forgetting to take your medication, not liking the taste, or side effects. Or perhaps you just don't understand why you need to take the medicine.
Whatever challenges you might be facing, we want to help you succeed. Our physicians, transplant nurses, social workers, pharmacists and psychology team are all here to talk with you in a non-judgmental way about your medication regimen. Together, we can help you identify these barriers and help find a solution.
Remember, developing a routine and schedule that works for you is the most important step for preventing rejection and staying healthy.
