A report released by UN Women and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in 2024 revealed that in 2023, 140 women and girls died every day at the hands of their partner or a close relative, including fathers, brothers and uncles. That’s one woman killed every 10 minutes. Current and former intimate partners account for about 60 per cent of all partner and family-related killings. The statistics surrounding the global femicide crisis are alarming, but they represent just the tip of the iceberg. Many cases are still not classified as gender-related killings because of variations in legal systems, case reporting and investigation practices. Some groups are particularly vulnerable, including women in the public eye, activists, journalists, indigenous women and women of colour, and transgender or gender-diverse individuals. The crisis needs to be addressed, among other ways, with education and awareness, including early detection of warning signs, and community engagement and action.
