The Story
Five young men from Yuba City — all close friends — vanished under bizarre circumstances after a basketball game.
They were:
Ted Weiher (32)
Jack Madruga (30)
Bill Sterling (29)
Jack Huett (24)
Gary Mathias (25)
All five had mild intellectual disabilities or mental health conditions. They called themselves “the boys” and were well-known in town for their friendship, love of sports, and kind nature.
On the evening of February 24, 1978, they drove from Yuba City to Chico (about 50 miles away) to watch a basketball game at Chico State University.
They were excited — the next day, they were going to play in a Special Olympics basketball tournament themselves.
After the game ended around 10 p.m., they got back into Jack Madruga’s 1969 Mercury Montego and drove away.
That was the last time anyone saw them alive.
