Carl Czerny (1791-1857), Austrian composer, teacher and pianist with Czech origin, has composed over thousand works encompassing a wide spectrum including a large body of piano works in various forms, chamber music, choral music, masses, concertos, and symphonies, many of these remain relatively obscured with limited dissemination and even unpublished (the manuscripts are held by Vienna's Society for the Friends of Music) except several didactic piano works such as op. 599, op. 299, and op. 740 which are better known and widely published. Czerny himself once remarked that he wished people could only remember his useful pedagogical exercises. Twentieth century composer Stravinsky wrote about his admiration and fascination to him: “As to Czerny, I have been appreciating the full-blooded musician in him more than the remarkable pedagogue.”
I hope to play and share some of his lesser-known pieces of music since I believe they need to be heard more.
