The 6th Century Ravana Phadi is the oldest cave temple built by Chalukyas among historical monuments at Aihole.

Aihole used to be the capital city during the rule of Chalukya dynasty, this place consists of around 125 temples, most are rock cut Hindu temples,carved out of sandstone,

The interiors of Ravana Phadi are filled with carvings depicting Hindu mythologies.

A big colossal pillar placed on a quadrangle base is located in front of the entrance hall to the temple.

There is also figure of Nandi Bull, the vehicle of Lord Shiva, in a seated posture.

Outside the entrance there are four simple pillars and either side are dwarapalakas,
Padmanidhi and Shankhanidhi.

There is a rectangular hallway inside the cave, known as mandapa.

There are two chambers on the sides of the Mandapa. In the left side,
Lord Shiva in Nataraja incarnation with 10 arms doing the tandav.
Goddess Parvati and Heavenly Mothers, known as Sapta Matrikas , Brahmi Mahesvari Kaumari Vaishnavi Vaarahi Indraani Chamund,The Shaktis of the different Devtas,
Lord Ganesha appears with 2 arms.

Lord Shiva in his Ardhanari incarnation, where he appears in the embodiment of half woman and half man, holding a trident in hand can be seen here.

Goddess Durga is portrayed in the carving. She appears to be slaying Mahishasura, so as Mahishasuramardini.All The sculptures are tall in size

The right chamber is incomplete and does not possess any carvings ,There are small empty chambers inside this area

Saint Bhringi offering prayer to Lord Shiva and Parvathi with Ganga yamuna and Saraswathy at the top can be seen here.

Lord Vishnu in the incarnation of Varaha. Goddess Bhumi appears on his hand in a seated position.

Shivalinga and the peeda in the inner sanctum
Is a single stone

Hari Hara in the form of Vaishnava and Shaiva are also present.

Caves have long been regarded as sacred places as it has been one of the places where one can isolate themselves and experience inner peace.
