In today's courtroom session out of Bexar County, Texas, we witness two very different defendants facing the same judge — and the outcomes couldn't be more different.
First up is Anthony Newton Harris, a defendant filed as a habitual offender who finds himself at odds with his own court-appointed attorney. Harris accuses his lawyer of not fighting for him and refuses to cooperate or accept legal advice. His attorney files a motion to withdraw, but the judge shuts it down. The court lays out the hard truth — no lawyer can force the state to offer what a defendant thinks is fair. Harris is told he can either work with his attorney, hire a new one out of pocket, or prepare to face a jury trial. The case is reset to November 14th with tensions still running high.
Then the court calls Amanda Drummond, charged with possession of a controlled substance, penalty group one, one to four grams — a third-degree felony punishable by two to ten years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Drummond enters a plea and the court defers a finding of guilt under deferred adjudication. But when the judge asks about her history, Drummond reveals thirteen years of daily substance use. The court pivots immediately, ordering a TAIP evaluation, pushing for inpatient treatment, and even exploring a felony drug court referral. The judge makes it clear — the goal here is recovery, not just punishment.
