Due to physical damage to installations during military operations in Ras Laffan Industrial City, QatarEnergy has paused LNG exports to Europe and stopped production. Due to high energy costs and physical constraints, this supply shock—which forced almost 20% of the world's LNG trade to go offline—has severely disrupted European firms.
Important Reasons for the Cessation of Military Attacks: Qatar Energy's Ras Laffan and Mesaieed operational facilities were hit by Iranian drone strikes, which resulted in damage and a production halt. Logistical Disruptions: Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was effectively stopped by the attacks, necessitating the declaration of force majeure. Extended Damage: Due to major damage to two of QatarEnergy's fourteen liquefaction trains, supply cancellations were extended into the summer of 2026.
Businesses in Europe Affected: Manufacturing and Industrial Companies (Heavy Gas Users)
Manufacturers of chemicals, petrochemicals, and fertilizers are among the industries most negatively impacted by natural gas production.
Forced Production Cuts: Businesses are forced to either pay enormous costs or cease operations due to rising pricing (a 50% increase on the Dutch TTF market).
Supply Competition: With Europe vying against Asia for scarce spot cargoes, industries may experience rationing, resulting in reduced production in nations such as Germany and Italy.
