Why Bother With Poker Workbooks?

"Hello,

I recently picked up a copy of The Postflop Workbook.

The exercises seem to be generally geared toward plugging the parameters (cards etc.) into an equity calculator... but in what way exactly does this transfer to actual play? Should I be memorizing or otherwise trying to utilize calculations like this at the tables, and if so, how is this done?

It is kind of hard for me to invest a lot of time in the book when I don't see a path toward application, i.e., I'm not seeing how plugging parameters into an equity calculator is going to help me improve my poker game.
