1 MENSA - Lacaille auf dem Tafelberg - Lacaille on Table Mountain

The French astronomer Abbé Nicolas Louis de Lacaille observed and mapped the night sky of the southern hemisphere from 1751 to 1753 from Table Mountain, near Cape Town, South Africa. One of the constellations he established was MONS MENSAE (Table Mountain), in the Magellanic Cloud,
as the summit of the mountain itself was often hidden in thick clouds. I can see the astronomer before me as he observes and catalogues the stars. His constellations lack the imagination of the northern signs; they mostly relate to technical achievements of his age that he wished to immortalize in the heavens. I have made MENSA, the official title of the constellation today, a song of the stars, rising from primeval depths to celestial heights, incorporating the following minor signs:

CAELUM - The Burin
CIRCINUS - The Drawing Compass
FORNAX - The Furnace
MICROSCOPIUM - The Microscope
NORMA - The Carpenter's Square
OCTANS - The Octant
PYXIS - The Compass
RETICULUM - The Net
and finally TELESCOPIUM - The Telescope,

that made all these constellations of the fifth magnitude visible. After Lacaille has "picked" these signs from the sky, the shortest of my miniatures ANTLIA - The Air Pump concludes. PICTOR - The Painter, SCULPTOR - The Sculptor and HOROLOGIUM - The Pendulum Clock are other constellations of Lacaille to which I ascribed separate pieces.


In den Jahren 1751 bis 1753 beobachtete der französische Astronom Abbé Nicolas Louis de Lacaille auf dem Tafelberg bei Kapstadt den südlichen Sternenhimmel und fügte einige Sterne zu Bildern zusammen. MONS MENSAE (Tafelberg) hieß eines dieser Sternbilder, das er in die Magellansche Nolke setzte, da der Tafelberg selbst oft von dicken Wolken verhangen ist: Ich sehe den Astronomen vor meinen Augen, wie er mit seinem Fernrohr versucht, die Sterne zu beobachten und zu katalogisieren. Seine Bezeichnungen haben nicht die Phantasie der nördlichen Sternbilder, sie beziehen sich meist auf technische Errungenschaften seiner Zeit, die er am Himmel verewigen wollte. MENSA, wie das Sternbild heute offiziell genannt wird, ist bei mir ein aus Urtiefen bis in höchste Höhen aufsteigender Sternengesang, in den hinein folgende Sternbildminiaturen gebettet sind:

CAELUM - Der Grabstichel
CIRCINUS - Der Zirkel
FORNAX - Der chemische Ofen
MICROSCOPIUM - Das Mikroskop
NORMA - Das Winkelmaß
OCTANS - Der Oktant
PYXIS - Der Kompaß
RETICULUM - Das Netz des Fernrohrs
und zuletzt TELESCOPIUM - Das Teleskop,

das die Beobachtung all dieser, zum Teil der 5. Sternenklasse zugeordneter Sternbilder erst möglich gemacht hat. Nachdem Lacaille sich diese Sterne „heruntergeholt" hat, erklingt noch die kürzeste meiner Sternminiaturen: ANTLIA - die Luftpumpe. PICTOR - der Maler, SCULPTOR - der Bildhauer und HOROLOGIUM - die Pendeluhr sind weitere von Lacaille eingeführte Sternbilder, denen ich eigene Stücke gewidmet habe.
