Sleep disturbance is common to nearly all mental disorders. It does not really matter which comes first (depression or lack of sleep), because improving one can improve the other. If you do nothing other than improve your sleep, you should at least FEEL better.

Depression has many possible causes – nutrient deficiencies, processed foods, SCREENS, lack of “belonging”, bad relationships, and more.

The vast majority of modern people are messing up their melatonin production big time. Staying up too late, sleeping in, sugar or alcohol or sleeping pills at night, moderately bright lights and electronic screens in the evening all decrease the amount of melatonin we produce.

Many people are eating well, supplementing well, exercise well, and have an overall healthy lifestyle – EXCEPT, they have messed up their melatonin production. You can do everything right and still suffer a symptom or disease, because of this.

Decreased melatonin has massive consequences – disturbed sleep (obviously), worse mood and attention, increased blood sugar and fats, increased weight gain, less tissue repair (because it is also a powerful antioxidant), and more. Lack of sleep and lack of melatonin has been linked to increased risk in cancer, heart disease, diabetes, “metabolic syndrome”, depression, and more.
