Srinivasa Iyer Ramaswamy, popularly known as Cho Ramaswamy, a Tamil Nadu-based political satirist passed away on Wednesday, two days after his close friend J.Jayalalithaa’s demise.
He was ailing for some time and was hospitalised for respiratory problems on a couple of occasions in recent times. He was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals in Chennai a couple of days ago.
The 82-year-old was a political satirist and editor of Thuglak, a Tamil magazine known for fearless criticism of political figures. He became popular in Tamil Nadu literary circles due to his unbiased take on political issues, and the audacity with which he published his viewpoints.
Recently, he even praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his diligent work towards the development of India.
Swamy had also won B.D. Goenka award for excellence in journalism and was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the BJP government led by A.B. Vajpayee. Well-versed in the Indian epics, Vedas and Puranas, he wrote extensively on religion and culture.
There were several efforts by the then DMK government to stop his work.
A lot of his plays were made into films.
