In his first key address since taking office for a second term on Jan. 20, U.S. President Donald Trump addressed a myriad of sensitive global issues, including the looming threat of 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and several other countries.
Addressing his country’s northern neighbour, Trump said, “Canada has been very tough to deal with over the years and it's not fair that we should have a $200-250 billion deficit,” further suggesting the U.S. no longer needs Canada’s supply of cars, lumber, oil, or gas. “We have more than anybody,” the Republican leader added.
Additionally, Trump vowed to request all NATO nations increase their annual defence spending from two per cent, to five per cent of GDP. “Most nations didn't pay until I came along,” he said.
Before panelists and attendees at the annual World Economic Forum conference in Davos, Switzerland, Trump also pushed responsibility for the Russia-Ukraine war, “to a certain extent,” on Saudi Arabia, while claiming both he and Russian President Vladimir Putin previously wanted to cut down on nuclear armaments.
